Ethiopia Team 1, Day 2, CHANGING THE WORLD FOR ONE!

Ethiopia Team 1 - Day 2
(Thank you, Delilah, for sending us these awesome updates of your trip.)

Isaiah 58:6-8
Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and to untie the chords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter -- when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.

Today seemed like one "God moment" after another. From being a blessing to a church in Korah and finding out that they had been praying for a miracle, to literally reaching people with the gospel over and over again. Our day started at the sheep market, where we bought three sheep for an orphanage and three for a church in Korah to serve some street children and men.

We dropped the first three off at the church so they could begin cooking, and we drove the remaining three to the orphanage so they could prepare them for tomorrow, when we return because all of the children will be out of school. After getting the sheep where they needed to be, we returned to the church in Korah. While the women at the church prepared the meal, Brent shared a powerful message and the gospel with more than 20 street children and men who ranged in age from around 10 years to adult-age.

Brent asked if anyone was sick and a young man came forward and said that he struggled with mental llness. Brent paryed for healing over the young man's mind and his life. It was a powerful moment, and there weren't many dry eyes in the place.

After the message the team gave each of them an article of clothing, some snacks, a toothbrush and a bible.

Shortly after that, the meal was prepared and we served each of them a full meal, which they probably hadn't had in weeks.

The pastor of the church was asked if they church had any needs, and one concern was that the rent had recently increased, actually doubled. So we were able to give him enough for a month's rent and shared with him that he should certainly laugh at that increase and know that our God is way bigger. The pastor later called our translator to reiterate his appreciation and said that he had prayed for a miracle. That church opened the doors to be a blessing to children and men who hadn't eaten a full meal in weeks and who desperately needed to hear the gospel, and in return, God made a way for that church to be blessed as well.

We returned to the guest house to sort out our numerous amounts of donations and we were simply blown away with what we had. The entire living and dining room was packed full as we sorted. It was incredible to see how many things filled the room.  We are thrilled to see how these many donations will bless so many in the next week.

A lot of the team have been outside of our guest house playing with a few of the children from around the area.

They are SO funny, as they know English (they learn it at school) and they are not afraid to ask us for anything. Any time you see them, they say, "where's Cassie?" because she was the first teammember to go out and play with them.

They are precious and so much fun to play with. Well, today we simply wanted to bless them, with more than a game of soccer. We had nine boys ranging in age from around 6 years, to probably about 14 years old. We brought them in one-by-one and got them shoes, a new outfit and snacks and candy.

Then we had them sit back out on the lawn while all of them went through. Once they were all done, Megyn sat down with them and shared the gospel with them.

We will see the boys morning and night for the next few days, and it excites us to think that they will see the light of Jesus in a tangible way.

Our final event for the day was dinner. Ashli was gracious enough to invite us over for dinner at her house. She hosted all 21 of us and about ten street kids from the post office area. We were served a traditional Ethiopian meal of injera, tibs, vegetables and sherro and enjoyed fellowship with one another and our new friends. During dinner, one of the teammembers noticed that the youngest of the street children, a boy named Kibron, seemed particularly underdressed. His shirt was too small, his shoes were ready for the trash and his clothes were dirty.

She suggested bringing him back to the guest house so we could bless him, and oh did we. He got a nice warm shower, new shoes, a new outfit, clothes, hygiene products, food and LOTS of love. We were told that Kibron is one of six children. Both of his parents are blind, so his older 15 year old brother takes care of each of the siblings and his parents. Their mother washes their clothes in a dirty lake, and because she is blind, their clothes are never fully cleaned. It was a blessing and honor to treat this sweet boy like he was the most important boy in all the world tonight. And I think that's the perfect ending to a perfect day for an Ordinary Hero mission team, simply changing the world for one.

Ethiopia Team 1, Day 1 of travel and hit the ground running!

Ethiopia Team 1 has landed!
That first full couple of days of travel are always a kicker!
They left for Ethiopia yesterday at 12pm in the afternoon, flew for 12 straight hours which gets them there at 12 midnight our time which is actually 8 am in the morning in Ethiopia. They have to arrive in the "morning" and hit the ground running. Let's just say you REALLY want to try to get some shut eye on that flight over. :-)

Everyone connected in DC beautifully and had a smooth flight over to Ethiopia.
I have heard from them and all is good. I will leave you with these pics from their travels and they will get me the pics of the first day as soon as they can.
I did get an update on the first day from Kelly B. Sounds like they had a wonderful first day on the ground. I will leave you with her update.....

Team 1 is officially on the ground and running or at least walking quickly. We landed and then got situated in the guest house and then we headed out to our first project of the week. We visited a transition home and had the best time holding the babies, playing soccer with the older kids and then pampering the nannies with pedicures galore. What an honor it is to be such a small but huge light to a group of people with some of the most simple of tools. The nannies lit up after having their nails done and I am sure they enjoyed a break from the children while knowing they were being well cared for and entertained. The team all agreed it was a great start to the week because all of the children we saw today had forever homes except for one. Walking into an orphanage can be overwhelmingly hopeless, but because of Ordinary Heroes like you and like me these sweet children all had infinite hope stored away in their smiles. They were calling out which state they were going to be moving to in the months to come and the mood in the house was one full of joy because of the passionate pursuit their parents had made. After a long two days of traveling the team has all called it a night in order to be well rested for the work to come. Our prayer is that in all we do, that we would be the tangible hands and feet of Jesus. Today we tried to remind the nannies at the orphanage that we all had the same gaping hole in our hearts, regardless of our wealth or lack there of, and that the same Jesus was there to fill that void and use us to point others to the solution. That is our goal over this next week, to bring hope to the hopeless, not by ourselves, because in the grand scheme of life our resources can seem so small, but with the hope of Christ, we can offer more than wealth can ever buy. We thank you for your prayers!

Meet the Team! OH Team 1 is Ethiopia Bound!

And our OH summer of missions begins.....

Our first Ordinary Hero Ethiopia Team 2012 is taking flight!
There are many great adventures in store for our OH missions teams throughout June and July.
We have two teams on the ground in Ethiopia in June and two teams in July.
We are looking forward to a full two months of serving, loving, and caring for orphans, widows, street children, village children, sponsored children and more.
Please keep all these teams in your prayers as we expect wonderful and life changing days ahead.

I want to introduce you to our awesome Team 1 leading the way this summer.
They are our first team on the ground and they officially fly out tomorrow for Ethiopia.
We had half of the team, the Nashville group (picture above), fly out to Washington today where they will meet up with the rest of the team to head over to Ethiopia tomorrow.
I met them at the airport to see them off this morning. This is going to be one amazing team!!

First I want to introduce you to our team leader, Jeremy Bullock, and his wife Kelly.
Jeremy led one of the teams last year and had such a great experience that he is back again this summer for some more adventure. Kelly was on our very first team ever in 2010, herself. They have adopted from Ethiopia and have a great big heart to serve.
They are from Tennessee.

Next we have Whitney. She is helping as a team leader on this trip as well. She traveled to ET last year and helped with one of our teams on the ground. She has a heart for the orphan and to serve.
Whitney is from North Carolina.

My daughter, Lauren, is leaving with this team
and will be staying to help with the first three OH teams through mid July.
She is a Tennessee girl.

Hannah is joining the team from Texas!

Scarlet is joining the team from Tennessee.

Haiti Hero ~ Respire ~ Sponsors Needed!

I have mentioned in some of my past blog posts about some of the great work that Megan with Respire Haiti is doing. I want to challenge all of you to consider sponsoring one of these kids in her school. These kids need to know that someone supports them and is there for them to make sure they rise above their current circumstances. 75% of the kids that Respire Haiti brings into their school are Restavek children. Those are children that are working in another families home as a child slave. This education is the first step to setting these children free. This school is a blessing. It was started by faith and runs by faith. Please watch this amazing story, featuring Megan, one of our Haiti Heroes, and hear the story behind how Megan acquired the land and started this ministry. She now is seeking sponsors for these children and Ordinary Hero is here to help. We ask you to join us as we partner with Megan to find these children school sponsors. Please visit our Sponsorship page for more info on how to visit our link to view the children needing sponsorship. Email Deborah@ordinaryhero.org for the password and link to view the children available for sponsorship. Let's get all these kids sponsored! We will be planning future Haiti trips to allow sponsors to visit the children as well. It's a great thing!

Respire also has a soccer program for these kiddos. We were there and saw them trying out for the team. It was awesome to watch. Our videographer talked to Josh, who runs this soccer program for Respire. Watch this video and see if there is anything you can do to help with this soccer program. Visit their contact page and send them a message if you can help toward their soccer program.

Thank you, Megan and Respire Haiti for serving the children in Haiti. You are an Ordinary Hero!!

Haiti Hero, Chadasha Foundation!!

There are so many amazing Ordinary Heroes doing extraordinary things to help the less fortunate in this world. Most don't ask for nor expect recognition. They simply help others because that is their passion and that is what they were born to do. Many people search for their passion their whole lives. Some find it and some don't. I can guarantee you that those that do, do so, by following that tug at their heart that leads them away from their comfort zone, away from themselves.

I want to highlight and feature our HAITI HEROES that resulted from our recent trip to Haiti. Please watch these videos today and tomorrow. These folks have taken an idea, a dream that only God could give, and added their own faith and will and pressed through all the doubts when things looked impossible, to start amazing ministries. Let these Ordinary Heroes inspire you! Let's all do what we can to make a difference in this world.

First I want to feature Greg and Michelle Roberts with Chadasha Foundation. They responded to the call to help in Haiti right after the earthquake. They quickly up and moved their family to Haiti. They have since started a children's home, are in the middle of a Haiti adoption themselves, they help children receive life saving heart surgeries, and are getting ready to build an orphan retreat center. Meet Greg and Michelle from Knoxville, TN and check out their ministry at www.chadasha.org.

Thank you, Greg and Michelle for being Ordinary (Haiti) Heroes!

Look for our second featured Haiti Hero tomorrow.

Celebrating YOU! Thank you for your pictures!!

Finally! I have this video ready for you guys to see
how many awesome Ordinary Heroes there are out there!
I put a one day only call out for any of you to send me pics if you have been inspired or encouraged by Ordinary Hero in any way. Wow! You sent me the pictures!! Lots of them :-)
It was so amazing to watch them pour in and read the stories and see so many lives changed!
I'm so blessed that OH has touched or inspired your life in some way!

This video is for all of YOU Ordinary Heroes, and to inspire those of you who aren't yet!
YOU can CHANGE THE WORLD FOR ONE!

If your family is featured in this video it would be awesome if you left a short comment telling the world a sentence or two of your story and how you have been inspired by OH.

Thanks to all of you who sent in pictures!
