We LOVE adoption!! Grant Giveaway!

As you know, adoption is near and dear to the heart of Ordinary Hero and we are passionate about orphans finding their forever families. We also care about helping families raise the money necessary for adoption, which is why we have our OH affiliate program.

With the support of State Farm Insurance, through the Beth Venable Memorial Fund, we are offering a ONE TIME adoption grant of $1,000 to an adoptive family who is an OH affiliate. Online applications will be accepted February 14-28 and the family who is selected to receive the grant will be notified by March 10. The recipient will be selected by the Ordinary Hero staff as well as Michael Venable.

Here are the requirements:
  • Family must be an OH affiliate fundraising family.
  • Family must be a client of a non-profit, 501c3 adoption agency. The grant will be sent directly to the family's agency.
  • Complete and submit online application (the link will be sent out via email to all affiliates).
  • Submit one reference letter.
  • Submit an Agency Confirmation Letter (verifying the family as their client, them as the placing agency and confirming their 501c3 status).
  • Submit a family letter, telling us your story in 500 words or less.
To sign up for our affiliate fundraising program click here. If you have any questions, please email Melissa at info@ordinaryhero.org.

Special thanks to State Farm Insurance, and all of the generous donors who gave in memory of Beth Ratliff Venable.

Another Seed Planted in Ethiopia From The Life Of Beth!

Beth Ratliff Venable was a beautiful mother and wife with a passion for Ethiopia.
Because of complications with a sudden brain disease, she went to be with the Lord shortly after bringing their adopted son home from Ethiopia, leaving her husband and four children to live out her legacy and passion to help the lives of those in Ethiopia and beyond.
Shortly after her death, money from those who were touched by Beth's life was donated to Ordinary Hero to carry on Beth's vision to make a difference. Michael found himself quickly on the ground in Ethiopia with Ordinary Hero founders, Shane and Kelly Putty, to see exactly where some of that money would be used.
Michael found himself visiting Kore` (Korah), which is the trash dump community of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the first time. His eyes were opened to the tremendous needs and struggles within this community.

The women labor daily in the trash dump to collect anything they can find that might feed their families.

While in Ethiopia Michael met Maste, a trusted guide, translator and friend of Ordinary Hero.
Maste grew up in this community and has a heart to help the mothers of Kore.
Maste states, "If you help a mother then you help the entire family move out of poverty."

This trip proved to be a blessing to Michael. Part of Beth's life seed was planted in Maste's upcoming Coffee business which will hire the mothers of the Kore` community to roast and bag the coffee. This will in turn, pull them out of a life in the trash dump and poverty, setting their children free from the cycle of defeat and allowing them to go to school and live the life that God intended them to live.
In December we were excited to see the beginning stages of the building.
Today Maste sent us a picture of the first coffee roasting machine, as he unveiled the name of his new coffee business to Michael for the very first time!

We are excited to announce
 KORE BETH COFFEE!

COMING SOON!!

This is just one of the ways that Beth's life continue's to make a difference in the lives of those she was so passionate about. If you have not seen the powerful story of Michael and Beth Venable and Michael's quest to live on her  life legacy, I encourage you to watch this video. Congrats, Becca Underwood, from MO! Becca and her husband Nick have 5 kids. They adopted for the first time in 2012 when they brought their 9 yr old daughter home from Ethiopia. They knew they would adopt again, thinking they'd wait at least a year. God had other plans and last November they learned about a 6 or 7 yr old boy who touched their hearts. They are now fundraising for his adoption and are excited to get him home. They have helped other adoptive families via Ordinary Hero in the past and are very appreciative to those who helped them out this time! Becca must have LOTS of friends that helped her with this. She had 49 orders credited to her name, bringing her total sales to $2856! Her 40% commission was $1142.40 and will be MATCHED! Her total earnings for our Matching Monday, in one day, was $2284.80! Congrats, Becca! Way to work it!!

Congrats, Dustin and Andrea Bestul, from NC! Dustin and Andrea say they are a family of 8, soon to be a family of 15!!! They have 3 biological children, 3 adopted children from Ethiopia, and are raising funds because they are in the process of adopting 7 MORE CHILDREN from the Philippines! OH has a special place in their hearts because an OH mission team took a Christmas package to their children while they were still waiting in an orphanage in Ethiopia. Click here to follow this family's journey! With just 5 orders, Dustin and Andrea made their way to the top three with $1166.35 in total sales. Their 40% commission of $466.54 will be MATCHED, bringing their total earnings in one day to $933.08! Congrats, Bestul family!

Congrats, Caitlin Cline, from Ky! Caitlin is raising funds for a mission trip to Ethiopia with Ordinary Hero in June! She is so excited to win and feels like this is an example in her life of how God can provide. She is so excited to see what God has planned for her on this mission trip and is now a little closer to making it happen! With just 4 orders, bringing her total sales to $563.79, Caitlin made her way to the top three! Martin Luther King Jr. Matching Grant Monday...
      We have a winner!

Congratulations, LaDonna Powell!!

LaDonna passing out clothes on her 2012 Ethiopia trip with OH

LaDonna is the recipient of our matching grant! Here's why she is fundraising with Ordinary Hero:

"Brooke and I went to Ethiopia for the first time in the summer of 2012 with OH.  We fell in love with the people of Ethiopia and loved that God chose us to be a part of such a wonderful organization and such an awesome mission opportunity. We knew we were called to be the hands and feet of Jesus to those that we came in contact with.  We have made relationships with the kids in Ethiopia and will be forever changed by the experience. All that being said, Brooke felt sure she would be returning in 2013 and was making plans before we could even make it back to America. As a college student with a minimal paying part time job, she is fundraising as much as she can to get back to Ethiopia, where she feels God is continuing to call her. Thank you, Ordinary Hero, for your support with these fundraising opportunities to do God's work!"

We are so excited to be able to help her daughter raise funds to get back to Ethiopia this summer! Good luck, Brooke!!

If you didn't participate this Monday, not to worry. We are having another Matching Grant Monday this coming Monday (January 28th) This is a great opportunity to add to your adoption or mission trip funds! This week, set a goal (maybe you'd like to reach $500 in sales) and let EVERYONE know about it. To reach $500, you only need 10 friends to spend $50. Your profit from that $500 would be $200, and if you're the top selling affiliate, OH will match that $200, for a total of $400! That's $400 in 1 DAY!!! So... start spreading the word, and good luck!!!

The Beautiful Life of Sallee Couch

We, at Ordinary Hero, want to pay tribute to the beautiful, God fearing, orphan loving, Proverbs 31, woman of God, Sallee Couch, who just lost her battle to cancer.
We rejoice that she is now free from her pain of this world, but at the same time,
our hearts break for this great loss to her family.

We met Sallee and her husband a couple of years ago through the adoption community in the Nashville area. She was so excited to be bringing her third adopted child home from Ethiopia to join her other 5 children. We were privileged to be able to meet him on an OH trip and take a picture of him for her while he was waiting to be brought home to live with his new, forever family. It was just before Christmas time so we took a picture of him with his Santa hat on :-)

During the adoption process, Sallee started her own sewing business to fund their adoption.
Thus, It's Poppy Dip was born. She made some of the most beautiful dresses you have ever seen.

Her beautiful daughter would always model them for her.

This small business went on to fund their adoption.

The time came shortly after, that they were able to go pick up their new, beloved son.

Little Samson was home and their family was complete. They were so excited!

It was very shortly after Samson arrived home that Sallee began not feeling well.
To make a long story short, out of the blue, she discovered she had advanced cancer.
She fought this dreaded disease with everything she had in her.
After many chemo treatments, she blogged in August...
"My doctor's main concern for me now is the quality of life. Being able to spend time with family, not being in bed all the time, ...that's what matters now. The cancer has spread to my liver and so we pray daily for a miracle. Because of the type of cancer I have, my doctor says that I'll probably battle it to the end. We try to remember to live each day as if its our last, take every moment as it comes."

So spending time with her family is what she did.

Her husband, Montie, wrote a powerful blog post on December 23rd, reminding us all of the beauty and great gift of love for our spouse and one another through the power of God's great love for us, even in such difficult times. It is something that we should all never forget.
This Christmas, 2012, I reflect back upon the year, a year that has been marked with suffering.
Not that there has not been good times, I am a very blessed man.
I have six great kids and they bring great joy in my life.
I know they have kept me going, at times when I thought I could do no more.
But most of all, I have the greatest wife in the world. She is my best friend and knows me only second to my God.
At times I search for good out of all that we have been through.
First I see that it has brought us closer as a family. We have been forced to pull together and hold one another up. Though we all deal with Sallee's sickness differently, it all comes down to a single thing. You are forced to ask the question; why. Why did this happy? Why did God allow this?
I know God loves me and my family.
And its okay to ask God why.
I believe suffering is a mystery, at least to me, not to God. He has allowed it and He has a purpose. There will be answers one day, I am sure of that.
But for now we trust.
One great blessing that has come from all of this, is the opportunity to love my wife in a way that not many have the chance to.
Through caring and comforting her as we walk through this together.
If marriage is a picture God has given us of Christ, and His relationship with His people, then I can see a glimpse into the answer.
We as His people, are suffering through the plague of sin. Christ, through His great love for us, came this Christmas day, to one day heal us completely from this dreaded disease.
Though we suffer now, He is there to comfort us. Not always with answers, but the very giving of Himself.
All of Himself.
Nothing held back.
I want to thank all of you for your continued prayers and support. We are blessed to have all of you as part of our family.
Sallee continues chemo. Next treatment, next part of January.
Merry Christmas,
Montie

Today as we remember Sallee and her family in prayer, let us not forget the great lessons that they have shown us from this great battle they have been through. I call it a battle that was won because LOVE always wins. Their example of love to all of us who get so caught up in the day to day struggles of life, gently reminds us of what is really important in life. It is family! It is Love! As they discovered, you never know what tomorrow will bring. Stay true to those you love. Hold them close. Let not the small things of this world distract us from the big picture of God's love for us, and how He wants us to show it to others who need it. The Couch Family have changed the world for three orphans, but yet, they have changed the world for all of us who know them and have seen their great example of love through unthinkable circumstances. Sallee's husband, her twin girls, and her teenage son have carried the load for her while she has been sick. Now they can carry on her great legacy of love and faith and the example that she has poured into each and every one of those that she loved.
They rise and call her blessed!

"Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate." Proverbs 31

Thank you, Sallee, for letting your life speak!
I will leave you with Sallee's words, once again from her blog....

"Try to remember to live each day as if its our last,
take every moment as it comes."
And finally, the message on Sallee's shirt in this picture I found says it all.
Never let us forget to.....LOVE ONE ANOTHER!

If you would like to bless Sallee's family through this difficult time, tax deductible donations can be made to Ordinary Hero here. Please put "Sallee Couch" in the memo line. They will receive 100% of your donation.

Last Day in Ethiopia, Dec 2012, Korah, Sheep, & H4H!

The week has flown by and our final day 7 in Ethiopia has begun!
We headed over to Korah, the trash dump community, and where Project 61 headquarters is set up.
We first met up with Emily, who runs the P61 clinic there in Korah.
We were able to deliver a couple of sponsor gifts, above, and then we were able to deliver a bunch of clinic supplies, pictured below, thanks to Sarah Williams, from Florida, who hosted a party to supply the P61 clinic with new supplies.
Thank you, Sarah, for taking time to have a party and collect supplies for P61! They were all delivered and added to their clinic!
We visited the Mission Ethiopia site where women without jobs are given jobs making jewelry. It is located within the P61 site. Jordan immediately saw a sweet mother whom she met on her last trip.

The women had our group sit with them as they showed us how they make the jewelry.
They all joined together and sang a few praise and worship songs. Their voices were beautiful and their thankfulness to God shown all over their faces as they remembered how far God has brought them and blessed them from their former life of struggle.

Jordan saw one of her favorite little girls that she bonded with last summer.
She was so thrilled to be able to see her again!

I met up with one of my favorite guys who used to work at the Leprous Hospital making straw mats with no fingers. He is amazing. He is now working, making the mats for Mission Ethiopia.
This man lets nothing stop him from working and does it all with a big grin on his face!

One of our best buds, Maste, helped us for the day! We all love Maste and all he does to help others in need, as he, himself, grew up in the Korah community.

After we left the P61 site, we decided to go on a home visit in the community.

Bira and Maste led the way as we were able to show the team how families live in Korah.

We then headed over to the other side of Korah to serve a church we have partnered with and give out 100 sheep to people in need in the community in order for them to have Christmas dinner.

We arrived at the church and they were all ready and waiting for us.
Tesfaye, below, is a great guy with a big heart for his community. He has some amazing people that attend his church.

After we all got into the church, sheep just started coming out of nowhere, ha!
We were able to line up and herd the sheep in and pass them out one by one...all 100 of them!!
These sheep are thanks to all of you who purchased them for children and families in need through the OH store. Thank you!!

There were many happy faces, after receiving their sheep! :-)

After we passed out the sheep we headed out with the blind and the lepers who were unable to carry theirs home. One of us led the blind while another helped carry the sheep to their house.

I was privileged to able to lead this sweet blind man to his home. When I asked if I could have a picture with him, he stopped and took off his hat and smiled. So sweet!
For most of my team it was their first time at sheep carrying, ha! It became quite the task.

We loved being able to carry them to the homes of the blind to ensure that they would have a nice Christmas dinner with their family.

This sweet woman had leprosy and was so grateful for her sheep that she wanted a picture with all of us after we helped her carry it home.

We said goodbye to the Korah community and headed out to the countryside to say goodbye to the kids at Hope 4 The Hopeless. We first stopped at their church. Some of our teams in the summer helped supply the materials for them to finish the construction of it and they wanted to show it to us.
It looks great! They bring the children here for church each week.
We arrived at H4H just as the kids were getting home from school.
We couldn't stay long but we all had our little friends that we wanted to say goodbye to before we left for America.

They prepared a coffee ceremony for us.

Our entire team had a blessed week in Ethiopia!
We were able to find a child a forever family by being there to advocate on his behalf, we were able to pass out 200 sheep and 54 donkey for families to have Christmas dinner and women who walk miles carrying heavy loads to relieve their burden, we were able to give many blessings through our Blessing Bags for children in need, and........

MANY THANKS to all of you who purchased chickens during our Grant Giveaway this past week!
We gave 40 chickens to children and their families for Christmas!

We have also gotten a testimony update already from one of the women we gave a donkey to from the program director...
"On December 17 we have distributed donkey for poor women that  collect firewood and fetch water. One of these women came back the next day to express her gratitude. She said she made 25 birr the same day she got the donkey. This woman was carrying water containers of 25 liter on her back for living. Now, she is fetching water on the back of the donkey. It carries two water tankers, 25 liter each, at a time

the woman is so grateful."

Thank you to an awesome OH team! And thank you to all of you who covered our team in prayer this past week while we were in Ethiopia. It truly makes such a difference and is a huge blessing to know we are covered.
Lastly, we could never do what we do in Ethiopia without our amazing team of strong men of God on the ground who take care of us and share in our blessings!

Thank you, Bissy, Gecho, and Maste for being such amazing Ordinary Heroes!!
We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!
