Christmas Stocking Stuffer Outreach....a great success!!

What a great family event of giving we had on Saturday! Many thanks go out to Holly, pictured above, for organizing such a great outreach. Many families showed up and stuffed 700 stockings that will be given to children in need this Christmas through Salvation Army and Nashville Rescue Mission.

This all started several years ago in honor of Mary Owen, the daughter of Angie, pictured above holding her new adopted daughter, and Jason pictured below, holding her as well. She was a precious 19 month old little girl who went to live with the Lord about 5 years ago. Her birthday is in December so a group from their Sunday School class started this outreach in honor of Mary Owen on her birthday in order to be able to give to children in need in her name. What started as a simple outreach now is joined by Ordinary Hero, several classes from the Brentwood United Methodist Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, as well as a group from Brentwood Baptist. As Mary Owen, who would be turning 7, watches from heaven, she has created a picture of what heaven will look like with so many groups from so many denominations. The Lord has blessed this family with 5 children. Mary Owen, who lives with Jesus, two sons, and two daughters, one in which was adopted domestically.

 

What a wonderful gathering in celebration of Mary Owen, as a slide show of her pictures danced on the back wall. 

When we arrived, Holly had everything organized and ready for folks to arrive and start down the lines to fill the stockings.

 Many helping hands went into putting these stockings together.

 This proved to be an excellent outreach for the children. It is always so important to get our children involved in serving others in need.  We must not forget that they are the next generation and God is raising up WORLD CHANGERS. (just as their shirt says)

 We are teaching our children to see outside their own world for a minute and think about doing something to help someone this Christmas who would not have a Christmas if they did not step up to help.

 I loved seeing all the different families who have adopted at this event. We are showing them that God chose them to help bring change to others. Below is Vanessa, who just returned with her little boy from Ethiopia within the past couple of months.

 The kids lined up and got to go from basket to basket, with the help of their parents, and fill the stockings to the top.

 They were greeted by a person at the end of the line who stapled the completed stocking and set it in the basket to be given away.

 It's so great to teach our children to serve as early as they can remember. I loved seeing the little ones.

After the stocking stuffing was complete there was a HUGE pot luck of all kinds of yums for everyone!!
Christen Cole offered her beautiful voice while everyone ate, to make the evening complete.

I know I always enjoy having my own children at as many outreaches as possible. I want to thank everyone who showed up to help. Thanks to you and your families we stuffed 700 stockings in no time flat. I expect more next year :) Many thanks to Holly for organizing, and all of the different groups who showed up to help.

And most importantly, we are blessed to be able to honor Mary Owen on her 7th birthday, by giving to so many children in need, as she dances and rejoices, singing songs of praise, with the angels in heaven, as they all looked down over us all as we celebrated her precious life. I can just see Jesus looking her in the eyes and saying, "Well done, my precious child. What a beautiful life you lived."

Join Us This Saturday for Christmas Stocking Stuffing for Families In Need

Ordinary Hero Christmas Stocking Stuffer Outreach 2010

This year, Ordinary Hero is partnering with a group from Brentwood United Methodist to stuff Christmas stockings for the Salvation Army.  This outreach sends stockings to Angel Tree Families, day care centers, and community centers, supported by the Salvation Army. The Brentwood United Methodist group (who does this in memory of class members' daughter, Mary Owen Hebert) already provides the largest number of stockings the Salvation Army receives. Through partnering with Ordinary Hero, we hope to help them fill even more stockings this year!  We have already been collecting toys, toothbrushes, playdoh, gloves, crayons, etc. We still need items to be donated in sets of 10. We are also working on collecting monetary donations which will be used to place an order with Oriental Trading and Dollar Days, to purchase the remaining items for the 700 stockings we hope to complete.  There will be a party at the church on this Saturday, November 20 at 5pm, in their youth building, to stuff the stockings which will be delivered to the Salvation Army. We will also send over 100 stockings to the Nashville Rescue Mission Women's shelter.

For the party, we set up lines of tubs filled with various stocking items.  Children and their parents pick up a stocking at the front of the line, go down the line putting one item from each tub in the stocking, and at the end of the line an adult staples the stocking together. This is a wonderful opportunity to allow your children to experience the spirit of giving to those less fortunate this Christmas season.

Once all stockings are stuffed, then the party begins... potluck dinner and music from Christen Cole. We ask that each family or volunteer bring a covered dish to share.

We are expecting well over 100 people in attendance. How Do I Start An Ordinary Hero In My Area? Here's A Perfect Example....

I often get asked "How do I start an Ordinary Hero in my city?" I say it is as simple as getting a group of friends together to make a difference.  That could be going to your local mission with snacks and crafts, or getting involved with any of our projects by using them as an example of how to serve and then just doing it where you live. We were so pleasantly surprised this week by a letter we received. Let me introduce you to Nancy(pictured above). I had never met Nancy, nor did I know that she was even a blog follower. Nancy is perfect example of how God can use you to make a difference when your heart is stirred toward something specific. You know, like when you watch something and you start the ugly cry? Yes, that is God stirring your heart.  Nancy lives in a very small Ky town just outside of Cincinnati. We received the following letter from her this past week. 

Here's more in Nancy's own words.....

"It’s through a combination of being blessed+blown away by the amazing work that Ordinary Hero actively pursues, Katie Davis in Uganda and Gwen & Suzanne of 147MO banding together & reading Crazy Love by Francis Chan, that I started to pray about what the Lord would use me for. I prayed hard, anytime I thought of it, day & night etc. Finally I thought of emailing another adoptive mother that I met at a picnic in May 2010 thru our home study agency to see what her thoughts were on doing more than we are. As the planning unfolded and things changed here and there in only the way that the Holy Spirit can do, I made up a shirt design, started selling t-shirts on September 3^rd, 2010 via Facebook and work of mouth!  By the 2^nd order placed early in October, we received 104 t-shirt orders and raised over $500 on t-shirts sales alone!!! My original post about the Sale was on August 31^st, 2010. The response was overwhelming! Gathering donations and pricing donations with the help of volunteers, we opened for business at our first Water for Korah Sale on Saturday October 16^th, 2010 @ 8am and were sold out by 2pm! We raised a total of $1,800 for Korah in 6 hours! Our total donation was $2,700 after all donations were counted in! Praise the Lord!  

Here’s is what I consider evidence that it was the Holy Spirit stirring hearts for Korah and nothing else: No one was asked to help, not 1 donation had to be chased down and all of the incredible locations that I thought would pull thru…didn’t….except a week or so before the Sale a church came to the rescue….it was the MOST perfect location for the sale and the church did not want to charge any fee at all for us to use their space! Did I mention it was a spectacular 70 degree October day!!!  =D  This is evidence to me and the oh say, 20 or so volunteers that worked the Sale start to finish and the countless people that donated to Korah, that God is alive and well, working in Korah and stirring hearts in Northern KY and VA, TX, WA, IN, OH, CA to be involved!"

 1st post on FB re: Water for Korah T—shirt Sale September 3^rd:

Nancy Bradford McCarter This is a tee w/ a design that I kind of created and am going to order for myself, Chad and anyone else that wants one. Proceeds to benefit, of course, WATER FOR KORAH! If I get an order for 8 more I can sell them for $26 and make a small profit and if I get any more orders the sale price will be even LESS and even more orders the sale price will be even LESS and even more rders the sale price will be even LESS and even mor...e profit!! My goal is to sell them for $20 but I want to be sure enough people will buy them 1st lol otherwise that wouldn't be much of a fund raiser =)The dark blue background/ square will not print, just the white Africa shape and the writing inside of Africa. The gentlemen in this pic were WAITING @ 7am in the parking lot to help set up for the Sale and ALSO set up a table of their own items, antiques as you can see, to sell and donated ALL of the proceeds to Water for Korah! I had no idea they were doing this until they started unpacking what they brought and setting up their own area!!

The latest thing that has spiraled from this effort was this in her own words....

"Also, someone that donated to and shopped the Korah Sale, has offered to have a benefit concert (we are thinking possibly early into 2011 or Spring time) to raise money for Korah....so VERY EXCITING things to come!  God is good."

So....there you have it!  That is how it is done. We have a number in mind to send to Project 61 specifically for land and water that has not been met yet.  Who knew that we would be receiving this? Well.....I know someone who knew :)  What a blessing!!  You see how everything you do to help others has a spiral effect?  People need/want something to do to help others in their community.  How has God called you to help and spread light on an area of need?

Happy Orphan Sunday...Some Light Shed On The Orphan And Our Little Man

I can't help but think of my son on this day. We brought him home from Ethiopia in September of 2008. He was 4 years old and had lived in an orphanage for 2 years waiting on a family. We showed up and waited anxiously inside the gate for our lives to change forever. Finally those gates opened and being led, hand in hand, by a man was the sweetest little boy my eyes had ever seen. They told us before we met him that he had been watching and waiting for us to arrive.  He had a best friend, whom he watched get picked up first by his adoptive family and then he cried, asking "Where is my Mommy and Daddy?" This little boy walked up to us with big round eyes, looking into ours. You could see it written all over his face. "Is it really you? Are you who I have been waiting for?" We took him in our arms and hugged him and kissed him and told him "We are here for you now. We are Mommy and Daddy."  His little face gave a slight grin as he grabbed our hand and never let go. We left that day with him in our arms and nothing else.  He didn't have a bag. He didn't have a toy or any item that he called his own. He was wearing a little button up shirt with buttons missing, a torn t shirt underneath, pants that hit him above his ankles and he had on girl underwear. It was all he had to his name......but now that would all change. Now he had a family and we had this precious child we had prayed and waited so long for. He literally left and never looked back. He was laughing and playing cars with us in the van on the way back to the hotel and never once asked to go back to the place he had called home for two years. 

We went back to the orphanage a couple of days later to take a tour of the place. He was with us and you should have seen how excited the kids who were left behind were to see him.  They were running up to him and saying his name.  You could see that they were so excited for him. He had found what they all were longing for....a family. Let me tell you that my little boy walked up with his precious backpack filled with all his new toys we had gotten him....the backpack that, as soon as he played with a toy, he would run back to and put it back in it's same place to make sure nothing happened to it. He set that backpack down as the kids circled around him and opened it up. He started pulling every one of his brand new toys out of his back pack and passing them out to his friends until every one of them were gone.  Shane and I were about in tears as we watched.  It was the sweetest thing that he wanted to share all his toys with them to play with. 

As it was time to leave, I asked the interpreter to tell him we were leaving, so that he could gather his toys. He bent down and said something to him and I saw him shake his head. The interpreter looked at us and said "He does not want them back. He wants his friends to have them." About that time, Nathan grabbed my hand, with his empty backpack on his back, looked up at me with those big brown eyes, and was ready to leave. As we walked out all the kids were waving goodbye and calling his name as he turned around and smiled at them one last time, never letting go of my and his Daddy's hand. 

It hit me at that moment, just how much he gets it. He gave away what we thought were his most precious things, to all his friends. It then hit us that those toys that he had been so excited about didn't even compare.  He knew that he had found the most precious thing that each and every one of them desired....a family. He went back to visit, with us by his side, and knew how badly they all wanted the same thing... so he gave them all he had.  My God, what love beyond his years, had been engrained in this child, based on what he had experienced as an orphan. 

It's been two years now. He is 6 years old, and it is like we have had him forever. God hand picked this child for our family and we couldn't be more blessed. Nathan sees everything we do in Africa and can't wait to go back himself to help pass out things to children in need. He went to the store with me before our last trip in July and helped me pick out everything that he thought they would need. He told me to take toothbrushes because he said they never brushed their teeth. He told me to take little cars because he thought they would like that.  You see, he remembers. We hope he always remembers. We show him pictures. We don't want him to forget. We pray he  becomes an advocate for his home country and takes what he has learned in America to help them one day. He is a special boy and we know God has big plans for him. We plan to take him back in the next couple of years when he gets a wee bit older. He can't wait to go.

Now here is a video I've shown before, but it is all taken from our team trip to Ethiopia three months ago. Most all of these children in this video are orphans. They are no different than our own children, except they wait. They wait, just like my son waited...for his family to arrive to come get him. Some children in this video have found families, but some......are still waiting.

Now you all know why I am passionate about the orphan. This is why I want to help all of you bring home your precious little ones.  This is why I want to help open the eyes of the ones who don't know.  I was one that didn't know this was out there for a long time. Maybe it wasn't that I didn't know,but that i never took the time to notice or do anything about it. I believe we can all do something, once our eyes are opened. 

When my eyes were finally opened to the orphan crisis, I looked for scripture on what God's heart was for the orphan.  I have listed some below.  God's heart bleeds for the orphan. That is why He depends on us...His hands and feet... to do something about it. 

May this Orphan Sunday make us all lift up our prayers for those who wait for families, and for those orphans who will never get adopted, but wait for help to arrive to ease the burdens of their living conditions. 

James 1:22-27 (New International Version)

 ²² Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Adoption Sunday, November 7th, at 11:59 pm will be the last opportunity to sign up as an adoptive family to receive credit for shirts that are sold through OH.  

In case you missed our announcement....we are giving away our t shirt sale profit through the month of November to every adoptive family who sends us their agency info and contact info, in order to confirm that you are signed with them. We will then send the agency a check at the close of the month to be credited toward your account. 


You receive $10 for every shirt sold that has your name added to the memo line.  Look for "add special instructions to the seller" Ad.  Click on the blue "ad" and put a name to be credited for the shirts.  It is hard to see this sentence if you are not looking for it.  It mostly appears under the address portion.

New Waiting Children.....

First of all, way to go on the shirt sales! We shipped out over 50 shirts yesterday and the orders are coming in for you guys.  We will give you an update of your totals sometime next week and then try to keep you updated week to week through the end of November. Woo hoo for y'all!!


I recently partnered with Wasatch International Adoptions to advocate for some of their waiting children from China. These cuties are currently waiting.  They are allowed to go on an open site which is why I can give you all a peek. Visit my OH site for further info on each of these children. I have some of their waiting children on my site. Visit their waiting children page to see all of their current waiting children.  Let's advocate and find these children homes during this month of adoption awareness.  

Above all else, pray for these children who are waiting for their family to come. Prayer changes things for sure!!

The Shirt Sales Are Coming In.....

 I'm loving seeing all the names coming in of families that are in the process of adopting and taking advantage of our t shirt profit give away!! Way to go! This is exciting for me because having adopted a child from Ethiopia, I know how every penny is precious to most of us out there.  I also know how I always wracked my brain to come up with fund raiser ideas.  So we are thrilled to be able to offer this, along with other fun stuff this month for all you guys!!

I wanted to throw up a few more pics of some of our shirts for you all, to show you how they look on people. Very top pic is the new OH grey shirt. I think she is wearing the medium which is a loose fit on a girl. My teen daughter, above, is a size small in the white shirt.

 Here are two different looks for t shirts in the winter.  I will let me and my sister be the models, Ha! As you can see, you can put the long sleeve shirt underneath and add the cute vest, or you can dress it up with the longer flowy jacket and boots. We are wearing the size medium in these rust shirts. (I was some kind of version of cat girl at our Halloween outreach :)

It's Adoption Awareness Month! Let us Help You Raise Some Funds For Those Adoptions!

What is the biggest question when it comes to adoption? 

How will I ever raise all that money? 

Next Sunday is Adoption Sunday. We want to take the whole month of November and dedicate it to adoptions. We want to help raise money for your adoption as well as bring more awareness of adoption. We have been trying to think of some clever and practical ways that we can do that. So here is one way.....

Throughout the whole month of November we are dedicating 100% of all of the profit of our t shirt sales to all of you who are in the process of adopting. So here is how it works.

Email us ~  at info@ordinaryhero.org

Send us your name, address, phone, and which adoption agency you are signed with, their website and phone number and contact person. We need to verify that you are signed with them so that we can send the donation at the end of the month from your shirt sales to your agency in order for it to be credited to your account.

Then sell those shirts! You will sell them for $24.95 a piece by linking people to our blog, where they can order. They will put your name in the "add special instructions to seller" box and you will get the credit. You will receive $10 for every shirt you sell. That leaves $10 for us to cover our cost in order to keep purchasing more orders of them, and the extra 4.95 for the shipping and handling.

So that is $10 a shirt!! You can sell them however you like. Have your friends sell them too, put it out on facebook, or blog, linking them to our blog, where they can purchase..... as long as everyone is putting your name in the memo line, you get the credit at the end of the month.

We will be putting out new items for sale, all throughout the month as well.  We have a new long sleeve kids shirt coming out soon!  You sell it, you get the $10 profit from it.

If you have a business that you would like to donate some profit from, for this month, toward our adoption grant fund, or toward a specific family, let us know, and we can put the word out. Get the sales in, then make that donation toward either the grant fund, or that special family you are trying to help.

Here is the exciting news!! We are going to match the amount given to the top three families who have the  highest shirt sales. So let's say you sell 50 shirts...you get $500 toward your adoption. If you fall in the top three, that will be doubled to $1000!!

So let me be clear that we are giving away all of our grant money that we have in our own budget as well as whatever else comes in during the month of November. We have some exciting ideas of other ways to have you participate and share your story of how you came to start your adoption, with an adoption grant give away in the end :) !!  More details coming soon.
