Most of us at Ordinary Hero are adoptive parents ourselves. 

We know the cost involved in international adoption and we are here to help relieve some of that burden by offering FREE LODGING to all adoptive families traveling to Ethiopia for their court appointment and/or Gotcha pick up. We are super excited to be utilizing our new Life Center in such a way to be a blessing to adoptive families!

The October grant STARTS TOMORROW (Wednesday, Oct. 16) and runs through 11:59pm (cst) Sunday, October 20th!

This month Ordinary Hero is offering three grants to our top selling affiliates! Our top selling affiliate will receive a $500 grant, our second place affiliate will receive a $300 grant, and our third place affiliate will receive a $100 grant - all to be put toward their adoption or mission trip fundraising efforts!! As always, affiliates will get 40% of sales they generate, whether or not you are in the top 3!

PLUS... We have an extra bonus for this giveaway! EVERY AFFILIATE who participates in this month's giveaway will receive a free shipping code to be used on a future purchase! As soon as there is a purchase made assigning you as the affiliate, you'll receive an email with that shipping code!! So... you can save some money on some Christmas shopping as well!!

Halloween Outreach 2013 - Volunteers and Sponsors Needed!

We are so excited for this year's Halloween Outreach! We have been doing this outreach since the very beginning of Ordinary Hero. The moms and kids at the Nashville Rescue Mission as well as our volunteers always look forward to this event! This year, we decided to do something a little different...

We are bringing the fun to THEM! That's right, this year we will be holding our annual Halloween Outreach at the Family Life Center in downtown Nashville! Since most of these kids probably won't get to trick or treat in a neighborhood, we are bringing the trick or treat to them with a "Trunk and Treat."

10 cars are needed to make this event a success. All you need to do is bring your car to the event, bring enough candy for 75 kids, decorate your trunk (optional), pop the trunk and the kids will come to you, all decked out in their costumes!

Can't be there? We've got an opportunity for you as well! You can sponsor a "trunk" for $100 which will cover the cost of candy, decorations and even a few costumes for the kids! We are also looking for people to donate $30 to cover the cost of a costume for one child living at the mission.  Also, fundraising affiliates, the costumes will be in our OH Store so you can get 40% credit, and help provide costumes for these kids! It's a win-win!!

September Grant Giveaway! It's a chicken FRENZY!!!

We decided to have a little fun with our grant giveaway this month by mixing it up a little bit! We made an Ordinary Hero goal of selling 200 chickens over 5 days to fill a chicken coop for an orphanage in Ethiopia! While we didn't quite reach our goal, we were BLOWN AWAY by how many we did sell. 122 CHICKENS!!! That will fill an awful lot of bellies! A HUGE thank you to our affiliates who helped get us there, and to everyone that purchased on behalf of our affiliates! You're generosity is appreciated!!!


SO..... Who were our top selling affiliates????

Congratulations to our TOP SELLING affiliate,  Jennifer Hanson! She earned herself the $500 grant PLUS the $100 bonus for selling the most chickens!!! Way to go, Jennifer! This is not the first time she has won one of our grants. You can read about her story here, but this month she wanted to share how she seems to have found success in our grant giveaways, and hopefully encourage others to try. Here's what she had to say:

       "I have to say that I'm not sure we were so much in the hunt for the grant money this time around and as we were slightly obsessed with getting as many of these chickens for the orphanage as possible.  The grant contest started on Sammy's 4th birthday and I felt God telling my heart that it was time to go to work, to use his birthday for a purpose, and to rally others around this chicken drive.  It was incredibly amazing to watch what happened.  One person purchased 8 chickens, than told their employer about this need, and their company matched her 8 chickens!  CRAZY!  We had people who regularly support our family buying chickens, and people I haven't had much contact with in years buying chickens!  I spent a lot of time on Facebook and created a BINGO type card with different categories (i.e. - A member of our wedding party, grandparent/relative, high school dance friend, pageant friend, bible study friend, etc...) and reached out to those specific groups searching for a person to buy a chicken so I could mark the spot off my 'Chicken Bingo Card':).  Perhaps the most touching purchase was one done by an old friend of mine in honor of my father, who passed away 4 years ago, to fill in the grandparent box.  I didn't expect to spend so much time crying the last 5 days as we rallied people for chickens:).

Our family set a goal of selling 40 chickens and more than doubled that goal...we were blown away!   The money for our account is truly just an after thought, but we are GRATEFUL!  I think I'm just focused on trying to figure out how to get the remaining chickens:)"

Congratulations to our second place affiliate, Allie Hoistad! She earned herself our $300 grant to put towards her upcoming mission trip to Ethiopia! She is heading to Ethiopia with Ordinary Hero in March of 2014, going with a group from Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, ND. She has been on many mission trips before, but this will be her first out of the country, and she says she knows God has great things in store for her! She is feeling so blessed by the generosity of her family and friends and with the opportunity to fundraise with OH! 

And... last, but not least, Congratulations to Ashley Rippke! She is the recipient of our $100 grant! She and Nate,her husband, are fundraising for their second adoption! They have a 4 yr. old daughter from Ethiopia who has been home for 10 months and are in process of adopting a 3 yr old boy through Adoption Advocates. Her blog can be found here.

Welcoming the Vargas Family to Ethiopia as OH full time missionaries!

We are super excited to welcome the Vargas Family to Ethiopia next month as full time missionaries for Ordinary Hero! The Vargas Family has committed to serve for one year in Ethiopia as our feet on the ground and to also welcome you or your group to the OH Life Center. 

We are so proud of this awesome family! 

Carlos and Amanda traveled to Ethiopia with Ordinary Hero last summer on an OH Team Mission Trip, and left with their hearts feeling called to do more for the people of Ethiopia. 

We are excited that they will be representing Ordinary Hero, year round in Ethiopia! 

They will be there to help serve the needy and welcome guests and future missionaries to Ethiopia, giving our guests and teams many opportunities to serve.

August Grant WINNERS!!!

Yay!! We love giving grants!! Ordinary Hero has an affiliate program in which we help those of you who are fundraising for adoptions or missions, raise funds. We give 40% of everything sold in the store to our affiliates when their name is checked in the drop down menu during check out. It is that simple. We also average about one grant giveaway per month. We just wrapped up our grant giveaway this month which ended Saturday night. The top three affiliates with highest sales ($ amount) credited to their name during our grant contest are getting an extra $500, $300, and $100 (respectively) on top of their 40% they earned in commission to be applied toward their adoption or mission trip expenses. Yay!!

Soooo......our winners are......

#1 seller is Kennedy Odegaard!! Congrats Kennedy, you did a great job of rallying friends and family to purchase on your behalf and earn yourself the $500 grant! Kennedy is a senior in high school and is fundraising for her SECOND mission trip with OH! Her first was last July and she fell in love with Ethiopia! She was planning how to get back there before she even got home! Congratulations! This grant will definitely help you towards your goal! A little bit about Kennedy... She's from a small town near Fargo, North Dakota and is busy wrapping up her senior year, preparing for an early graduation, starting college, an upcoming internship in Ethiopia, and preparing for the Miss Teen North Dakota USA pageant coming up in November! Even though her plate is very full, becoming an advocate for orphans has taken hold in her heart. She can't wait to use the pageant to show people we can all do our part to CHANGE THE WORLD FOR ONE!

#2 seller is Jenny Hanson!! Congrats, Jenny!! Jenny and her husband Bryan are the recipients of our $300 grant! They are fundraising for their second Ethiopian adoption. They have 2 biological kiddos and one adopted from Ethiopia. Their kids are SO excited for another sister to join their family! When they found out the family was adopting again, they made it clear they wanted to travel with their parents! So, fundraising with OH allows them to match whatever is raised and put it towards plane tickets for the kids! In under 2 months, because of grant opportunities and OH fundraising, they've already put enough away for one plane ticket!!! Way to go! Congratulations!! 

#3 seller is  Heather Vendervort!! Heather is fundraising for her first mission trip coming up in March with Ordinary Hero. It will also be her first trip overseas! She is so excited but equally nervous and is grateful for the support her husband is showing in being willing to take care of their three boys while she is away. She is the winner of our $100 grant, and is so excited to be one of this month's winners!! She says the grant contests are just more incentive for her to share about OH! Congratulations, Heather!!

We Are So Rich!

Another realization from our trip to Africa this summer, written by Kim in her blog post....

WE ARE SO RICH!

"Nothing to eat".

I have thought about this phrase for months now, and each time I say it or hear it, I know darn well that we have plenty to eat.

In America, for most, that phrase really means, "nothing that I want to eat"....or "nothing I feel like cooking".

It means that you have plenty of frozen chicken and vegetables in your freezer.

It means that you have canned beans and soup. You have rice, pasta and several flavors of sauce. You have a ton of cereal, oatmeal and ingredients to make homemade pancakes or cookies. You are stocked on peanut butter and have snacks like raisins, pudding, chips and popcorn. But since we literally had each of those items in our kitchens since we were brought into this world, to us, there is "nothing to eat".

I have to remember how rich I am.

I have to remember that I am so blessed to have my job, house, car, and healthy family. I have to remember how blessed I am to have freedom, clean air, a shower with clean water, a bathroom, and an entire room dedicated to laundry. I have to remember how blessed I am to have plenty of food, closet space, decorations for every season, reliable doctors, insurance, clothes, air conditioning, appliances, a yard, tools and lawn tools, a garage, the opportunity to buy new clothes, shoes and groceries.

I have to remember.

I am so rich.

July Grant Giveaway... We have 3 winners!!!

We are excited to announce the recipients of July's Grant Giveaway!

This month, OH offered three grants to the top selling affiliates.. 

$1000, $500, and $300!

Our $1000 Grant Recipient is...     JENNY HANSON!!!

Jenny is from Maple Grove, Minnesota, and is fundraising for an adoption. Her and her husband have 3 kids - the youngest adopted from Ethiopia in 2011. She traveled to Ethiopia on a mission trip with Ordinary Hero in April and was able to meet the child they are adopting! When asked what they were fundraising for here was some of her answer: 'The easy answer is we are fundraising for our adoption. The complicated answer is we are actually fundraising for our children's plane tickets so they can join us on our trips. Whatever amount goes to our adoption agency from OH sales, we are putting that same amount of money towards their airfare.'  So exciting for their family! We are so excited to be able to grant that $1000  to their agency, so they can save that money and put it towards air fare instead!! Congratulations Hanson Family!!!

Our $500 Grant Recipient is... LACEY BARTOSH!!!

Lacey is fundraising to have the opportunity continue building relationships with the beautiful Children of God in Ethiopia. She is starting a new job in August, and is not yet sure of the exact dates she will be heading back, but she knows that it will come!! She says she loves Ordinary Hero and Ethiopia - she even got engaged in Ethiopia this past July while on a mission trip with her fiancé! (So exciting!!) She can't wait to travel again and see those beautiful sweet faces!! We are so happy to be helping you

Our $300 Grant Recipient is...  SABRINA GLOVER!!!

Sabrina says this is her first attempt at fundraising, and didn't really expect anything, but God had different plans! She is fundraising for a mission trip with her 14 year old daughter to Guatemala in January. She will be traveling with a group from Hillcrest Baptist Church in Hopkinsville, Ky. Congratulations on a great start to your fundraising!

Project Backpack 2013

THANK YOU....for making Project Backpack a success FIVE years in a row!! 

We were able to bless the kids residing at the Nashville Rescue Mission, each with a brand new backpack filled with school supplies allowing them to be prepared for the first day of school! 

 We want to give a HUGE THANK YOU to Bev Stacey for coordinating our 

Project Backpack each year! Bev, you do an amazing job!! 

 We are thrilled to have Stacy Case with Fox News Nashville, and her awesome kids, helping with our Project Backpack. Stacy's kids love being a part of this each year.  They even included special notes in the backpacks that they prepared.

 This outreach is always a great way to get your children involved in giving back. 

We always love seeing the smiles on the faces of the mothers. This is always such a relief to them, knowing that their children's school needs are met.

Starvation on Entoto Mountain....Let's Help Lift Their Burden...For Good!

Starvation To Endihnew's Hope! 

All of our OH Ethiopia trips consist of visiting Entoto Mountain to help "lift the burden" of the many woman who struggle each day to provide for their children. It is heart breaking to watch as we see woman of all ages, bent over, carrying bundles of wood on their backs for miles upon miles down a steep mountain, for what amounts to not quite $2 per day. 

We have seen and tried to help young women, like this woman below who is 6 months pregnant,  carrying loads that can easily weigh over 100 lbs. 

 And we have helped her by offering her a ride and carrying her load for her, while washing her feet and giving her new shoes and basic necessities to show her God's love. 

 It has been the delight of our teams to help the women by helping to lift their burdens and carry them down the mountainside, relieving them of an entire day's labor. 

 For what seems like such a small act of service on our part, the women are always so thankful.

Why do they do this? Because they must feed their children. 

They are desperate for income and they muster up shear will power and divine strength to carry these loads for so many miles. It truly is unbelievable and heartbreaking to watch! We have struggled with trying to provide a way to get these women off the mountain 

and provide them with sustainable income. 

Just when we thought seeing the 

women in these conditions was bad, 

this summer, during the visit of my last team, we were introduced to something much more heart-wrenching

 than any of us expected....

their children!

We met a wonderful man named Mesfin who introduced our team to his feeding program that he has started on Saturdays for the children of Entoto Mountain.  

It's called Endihnew's Hope. 

We had never been before and were excited to show up and help! 

What we found was heartbreaking and something that shook our team for the rest of the week! 

What we found were starving children! 

Mesfin pulled out the bag of food and our team did the best they could to keep things in an orderly fashion. You could definitely see the look of panic rush across their faces as they knew that if they did not get this food they didn't know when they would eat again. 

 This level of starvation and hoarding was new to our team. We have seen some dire circumstances but nothing ever this bad. We could see that they did not know when they would eat again. The look of starvation washed over these little one's faces in the form of  lifelessness and desperation, as pictured in this little girl's eyes below. 

 The worst part about all of it was the fact that we came to help this ministry with their feeding program.  What we were not expecting AT ALL was that 

THEY RAN OUT OF FOOD FOR THESE CHILDREN! 

We discovered that Mesfin tries to feed 160 children on his own every single Saturday, and he simply does not have the funds to bring enough food for everyone. 

We all desperately started tearing through our backpacks for crackers, power bars, granola, whatever we had for ourselves, we started dividing it up between the children that were left as fast as we could. 

I stepped out of the building where we were preparing shoes to pass out, and saw Colleen just holding this baby girl as tears streamed down Colleen's face. I asked someone what was wrong and they told me that they had just run out of food and this little girl did not get any. It was just too much to bear! 

Colleen, being a mother herself, was seeing what it felt like, for the first time, not to be able to feed a child when she saw that she was in desperate need. 

 Thankfully, someone saw what was happening and shared some of their food with this little girl. 

 Look at what an unbelievable transformation she had, simply by getting food in her stomach!  She regained something that had been lost.....her smile, her hope.  To top it off, Colleen found a little stuffed bear to give this child joy that every child should experience....that of a child. She deserves that. 

18 yr old, Madison, shared her heart on one of her blog posts....

HOPE AND HEARTBREAK

"Most of their faces had the response of serious hunger. I was handed wet wipes, so I thought it best to wipe these precious survivors faces, hands and feet. 

I wiped the mud off their bodies, and sent them in. Every time I bent down and looked a child in the eyes, my heart got a little heavier. As I bent down to the next precious little girl, she looked up at me and smiled and God brought to memory the scripture, Psalm 34:18,

"The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

These sweet, young spirits had been crushed by poverty and hunger and God brought us to them, as His hands and His feet, to wash the mud off their sweet faces, to calm their hearts when they yelled for shoes or food, to assure them that we would get them in that room, that they would be seen, that they would be taken care of. Two or three times in the beginning, I just stood in that door way with tears running down my face, torn up for these precious children." 

Kelly Blevins also shares her heart from this day in the mountainside in her words from her blog...

"I experienced the cliche' of "starving children in Africa" today and it became very personal. Tears welled in my eyes as we began passing food to starving children...As the kids were waiting in line, I locked eyes with a sweet girl who was worried that we would run out before it was her turn. I learned how to tell her "it's okay" in Ahmeric and just kept holding her hand. As she inched closer and closer to the door she laid her head on my chest and I could feel her release a sigh of relief."

Bottom Line....THESE KIDS NEED OUR HELP! 

Another thing that this ministry can provide, with our help, is a WAY OUT for these mothers. 

We are so thrilled to help pull each of these mothers off the mountain!

No longer a life of heavy burden! She can go from carrying heavy loads for miles a day....

to laying that load down to do clay pottery work and weaving instead! 

Mesfin has prepared a rented space for them to work in. 

Our hearts were torn apart on this day, but we were not left without hope! 

We see the beginnings of what could be life changing for these women and children 

with our help! 

The sad part is that he really can feed all 160 children each Saturday for $1 a day. 

THIS IS WHERE YOU CAN HELP! 

We have set up a giving page through Ordinary Hero and are partnering with Endihnew's Hope to  bring more hope to these sweet mothers and their children and provide an escape from hunger and the destruction that dire poverty can bring. 

A $160 donation will feed all 160 children every Saturday in the feeding program and ensure that EVERY CHILD will get something to eat. 

If we can get $30 monthly givers for all 160 children then we could feed all 160 children a meal EVERY DAY! That is only $4800 a month. 

You are welcome to give toward a month's supply of food as well. 

ALSO, you may sponsor a mother for $50 per month. That will pull her off of the mountainside from carrying wood, and give her a job of clay work and weaving. It will pay her a salary to feed her children with and pay her rent for the month. You can literally change a family's life for $50 per month.

We also hope to be able to help with the sale of the clay work 

and weaving through our team visits.

Lastly there is a need for new traditional looms and materials. A $1000 donation would provide the resources to purchase more materials to be able to hire more women to work on weaving.

After feeding the children and then spending some time with them, their precious spirits came bubbling to the surface. This showed us the hope and promise of the future for each and every precious mother and child on Entoto Mountain.
